Bolivia Coup Attempt Foiled
Top General Among Those Involved
International Community Condemns Attempt
La Paz, Bolivia – A top general and several allied members of the Bolivian military attempted to storm the presidential palace on Wednesday, plunging the country into chaos and raising fears of a military coup.
The attempt was quickly thwarted by loyalist forces, who arrested General Romulo Calvimontes and several other officers. President Luis Arce condemned the coup attempt and vowed to bring those responsible to justice. The United States and other international organizations have also condemned the attempt and called for a peaceful resolution.
The coup attempt came just days after the release of a report by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), which found that the government of former President Jeanine Añez had committed serious human rights violations during its time in power. The report accused Añez's government of killing at least 35 people and injuring hundreds more during its eight-month tenure.
The coup attempt has raised concerns about the stability of Bolivia, which has been plagued by political instability in recent years. Arce, who was elected in October 2020, has vowed to restore democracy and stability to the country.
